World Poetry Day, March 21, was established by the United Nations in Paris in 1999 to promote poets around the world as well as the reading, writing and teaching of poetry worldwide. The theme this year is “Poetry as a Bridge for Peace and Inclusion.”
Recently, Britannia ES grade 7s were sent out to capture images that were metaphors for their community on the East Side of Vancouver, off of Commercial Drive, a designated inner-city space. The result? Some world class poetry and images! We are pleased to celebrate Poppy’s photo and poem below in celebration of World Poetry Day. What can you tell about this youth and her world from her words?

Carpe Diem

Though it may be a bit cliché,
this photo reflects seizing the moment.
Most people avoid puddles on the sidewalk,
walk around them.
However, some people make a splash instead.
In my opinion, this represents not overthinking and living life in the moment.
On the Drive,
I have been taught,
that sometimes it is better to get your shoes wet
instead of always playing it safe!
